Did You Know?

Invasive plants are spreading through our natural ecosystems, urban landscapes, and agricultural lands at an alarming rate.  Garden shops and big box stores in North America offer consumers a variety of terrestrial and aquatic garden plants. Unfortunately, some of the plants that are available to consumers at these stores are not native to Ontario and have the potential to become invasive if these plants spread from our gardens into the wild. When invasive exotic plants escape and become established in natural areas they are difficult to control and may be impossible to completely remove.

What You Can Do

  • Learn to identify invasive plant species that are a threat to Ontario
  • Buy native or non-native plants from reputable garden suppliers. See Grow Me Instead: Beautiful Non-Invasive Plants for Your Garden
  • Dispose of invasive plants in the garbage. Do not put them in the compost of discard them in natural areas or local waterways
  • If you think you’ve seen an invasive species in the wild, please contact the Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711, or visit www.EDDMapS.org to report a sighting.
